| | Day 58 (Lent Day #6) (or "First fruits for the Big Guy") Hurray, I'm back from my big weekend. Wow. It's great. As tired (and slightly grumpy) as I get at the end of these weekends, I never regret doing them. Ever. (Next weekend’s June 22nd, 23rd, 24th if you’re all interested Save the date) I heard such an awesome homily this weekend! It was from a Norbertine priest (A very learned and orthodox order) so it was not easily digestible by baby Christians but I savored every point of it. Among the cool things he discussed, one of which was an awesome, insightful commentary of the temptation after the 40 day fast, was how just like Israel, we are to give God the first fruits. We give the BEST to God, not the scraps/left-overs. Cause, Lent to a lot of us (me included) is something we go into grudgingly, we don't always give up what we really love; we give up something that annoys us when we realize we can't have it. Properly offering something up, is to do it happily, cause we do it out of love. Without a single bite of food or drop of drink for 40 days in the desert, there was only one thing that could sustain a man like Christ—love. And so while I give up ol’ Internet this time around again I should stop and think how glad I am that I love Christ more than I need to look up song lyrics (I’ll just sing the song wrong till Easter) or have facts/answers to useless ponderings (so I can't look up Scott Baio's TV career on imdb.com). It frees me from the desires in this life to desire the thing I really want. |
